Provenance: The Arnold Fellows Collection
Henry Bright (1819-1873) was a friend of JMW Turner, and was highly regarded by John Ruskin. Bright toured the UK and Europe, working in oils, watercolour, chalk and pencil. He was sometimes accompanied by Turner.
An English landscape painter, he was associated with the Norwich School of painters, and was trained by John Sell Cotman.
He was also a friend of other leading artists, including Samuel Prout, David Cox and James Duffield Harding. He was particularly influenced by Harding's oil and pencil technique and, like him, published a number of drawing-books in the 1840s.
Some of the world's most influential collectors bought his works, including Queen Victoria. He also received several commissions from the Grand Duchess Marie of Russia.
