Devis was an English landscape painter, who was mostly active in and around London.
He produced many landscapes for landowners in Northern England between 1760-1780. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1772 and 1781.
Devis mostly produced topographical sketches and paintings of identifiable places in UK in gothic style, popular at the time. His subjects including ruined castles and abbeys, old manor houses, and views over the Thames. Two pictures of Hadleigh Castle, in Essex, is held the Becrofy Museum, at Southend.
Devis's gothic revival art attracted much interest, even from abroad.
His landscapes were the inspiration for a number of pictorial designs Catherine the Great of Russia commissioned on a 944 piece dinner and dessert service for one of her places.
